Baker boys win, but girls lose to Tigers
ONTARIO — Baker split its boys and girls tennis matches with Ontario Thursday afternoon.
The Bulldogs won the boys match 4-1, but lost the girls match 5-0.
Baker’s Dan Sizer and Jordan Curtis won the first two boys singles matches in straight sets.
The Bulldogs then swept the boys doubles. Trenton Howard and Nathan
Eiselein won the No. 1 doubles, and JJ Vela and Chance Parry the No. 2
doubles.
On the girls side, the closest Baker came to a win was the No. 2 singles where Helen Galiszewski lost in three sets.
Baker travels to Vale Tuesday before hosting La Grande next Thursday.

Baker drops second game, the 2nd-ranked Bulldogs’ first loss of the season
Baker probably had its worst day of the season on the baseball
diamond Friday. The Bulldogs didn’t look like the Class 4A
second-ranked team at times while splitting a Greater Oregon League
doubleheader with La Grande at the Baker Sports Complex.
Baker rallied in Game 1 to earn a 5-4 decision. But the Bulldogs’
luck ran out in the second game, a 9-4 La Grande win. The loss was
Baker’s first in a dozen games this season.
“We just didn’t play Baker baseball, particularly in the second game,” Coach Dan Blankenship said.
“It was a great team effort in the first game. Our pitchers threw
pretty well and we hit the ball pretty well late, got some clutch hits.
“Then in the second game, our pitchers didn’t pitch well, we didn’t hit the ball well. It wasn’t our day.
“The bottom line is we did not deserve to win the second game the
way we swung the bats,” Blankenship said. “We didn’t swing with
confidence.”

Baker and La Grande battled to a split in a Greater Oregon League
softball doubleheader Friday afternoon at the Baker Sports Complex.
But the twinbill proved to be more costly to the Bulldogs than a single game.
Coach Al McCauley was ejected from Game 1 with two outs in the top of the seventh inning.
Baker won that game 7-3, but lost McCauley for the second game, and for the first game of Friday’s twinbill at Ontario.
“The way the rule reads I’ll have to sit out the first game at
Ontario,” McCauley said Sunday. “The way the rule says there is the
ejection day and a suspension day. And, I have to take a sportsmanship
class in the next seven days.”
McCauley was tossed after disputing a call at second base. On the
play a La Grande base runner went into the bag standing up, preventing
Baker from completing an attempt at a double play.

Baker’s baseball record remains without a blemish, but the Bulldogs
didn’t exactly play perfectly in sweeping a doubleheader from Weiser,
Idaho, Tuesday at the Sports Complex.
They did come awfully close, though.
Five Baker pitchers combined to hold the Wolverines to a single hit in the 7-0, 13-0 sweep.
The quintet surrendered just two walks.
And the Baker defense committed only one error.
The Bulldog hitters, meanwhile, treated the ball rather more harshly than Weiser did.

Darryn McCauley and Mackenzie Srack’s teammates supplied a lot more runs than the pair of pitchers needed.
One run, as it turned out, would have been plenty.
And Baker’s Sierra Howerton got that run with a leadoff homer.
McCauley and Srack combined on a three-hitter, and the Bulldogs beat
Weiser 12-0 in a non-league softball game Tuesday afternoon at the
Baker Sports Complex.

The Vale Vikings lived up to their reputation as one of the top
tennis schools in the region by beating the Baker boys and girls
Tuesday afternoon at the Ash Grove Complex.
Vale won the boys match 3-2.
The Vikings prevailed 4-1 in the girls match.
A heavy rain shower arrived about an hour before play was to begin,
but coaches and players broomed water off the courts and the sun
returned to dry the surface in time for the match to get started about
on schedule, Baker Coach George Keister said.

LA GRANDE — It was simply another typical year at the La Grande invite.
Golfers had to endure consistent weather changes every 15 to 20 minutes.
Several golfers peeled off layers of clothes for one hole, only to put them back on for the next hole.
“That’s the beauty of spring sports I guess,” La Grande head coach Kelli Miller said.
