La Grande exploded for a 32-point fourth quarter Friday to come from
behind and defeat Baker 62-58 in a Greater Oregon League boys
basketball game at BHS.
Trailing 40-22 with 2:49 left in the third period, La Grande outscored
Baker 40-18 the rest of the game to defeat the Bulldogs for the second
time in the GOL season.
Baker coach Craig Woods could only shake his head after the game.
“We started to press,” he said. “We’d miss a shot and they’d come down
and hit some shots. La Grande played a great game. They got things
done,” Woods said. “We made some poor decisions. Things just didn’t
happen.”

Baker loaded up the bus and took its boys basketball show on the road last weekend, splitting a pair of games.
Playing without leading scorer Derek Blankenship, who was playing
baseball in Arizona, the Bulldogs dropped a 49-46 Greater Oregon League
contest at La Grande Friday. Baker then rebounded to top Fruitland,
Idaho, 53-45 Saturday at Fruitland.
“We learned a lot about ourselves,” said Baker coach Craig Woods. “I was proud of the kids. They hustled and played hard.
“We would have liked to get the win at La Grande, but a couple of
bounces just didn’t go our way. I was thinking afterwards that we’re
disappointed but knowing how well the other kids stepped up with Derek
gone was just great basketball. We just have to take the positives from
it.”

Baker’s roster looked more like a MASH unit than a girls basketball
team Friday following a 41-33 Greater Oregon League loss at La Grande.
Mackenzie Warner was nursing a sprained wrist, Whitney Phillips a cut mouth and Mackenzie Srack a sprained ankle.
“The game was extremely physical and we didn’t handle that pressure up front very well,” said Baker coach Tim Smith.
“We turned the ball over too many times in the first half. We gave up too many opportunities.”
Smith said the Bulldogs finished with more than 30 turnovers in the game.
“We were playing catchup all the time, and we’re not a catchup type
of team. We have to continue to convince ourselves that we can handle
the basketball,” Smith said.
The Bulldogs suffered a major blow when Warner went down in the
second quarter. The Baker senior got tangled up with a La Grande player
and fell on her wrist.
Warner was taken to Grande Ronde Hospital for x-rays. Preliminary reports were that she had broken her wrist.
