Cold second quarter costly for Baker girls

A cold-shooting offense, and an even colder second quarter spelled defeat for Baker Tuesday in a non-league girls basketball game against Fruitland, Idaho.

Baker outscored the Grizzlies in the other three quarters, but fell 16-2 in the second quarter on the way to a 43-31 defeat in the Baker gym.

“We came out in the second half and played better,” said Baker coach Tim Smith. “But we had a bunch of turnovers in the first half and didn’t take care of the basketball.

“We just need to take care of the ball better,” Smith said. “We’re not where we need to be at this time of the season. And, offensively, we need to find a way to score more.”

Josh Cobb, 28, of Haines, won in a time of 40:44.46 followed closely by Mike McInnis, 60, of La Grande in a time of 41:00.45. The snowshoe course was a 7km out and back following the Black Lake Trail.
