Weiser nips Baker soccer girls

Weiser scored a pair of second-half goals to edge Baker 2-0 Thursday in a non-league girls soccer match at the Baker Sports Complex.
Baker (0-1) was playing its season-opening match. Weiser was playing its fifth game of the season.

Baker defeats Weiser on gridiron

Baker opened its 2009 high school football season with a 20-14 non-league victory at Weiser, Idaho, Friday.

Baker gridders excited about defending GOL title

Baker head football coach Dave Johnson sums up his preseason prognostication this way:

“We have high expectations, and we haven’t changed those expectations” since last week’s commencement of two-a-day practices, he said. “We feel good about where we’re at, both in terms of installation and personnel. We have a lot of guys who (reported) ready to go.


McCauley back for second stint

She coached the Baker varsity from 1995 through 2001, during which her teams won one GOL championship

A familiar face welcomed the Baker volleyball players to fall practices last week.

Michele McCauley returns for her second stint as the Baker coach. McCauley coached the Bulldogs from 1995 through 2001, winning the Greater Oregon League title in 1998, and placing seventh at the Class 3A state tournament in 2001.


New coach, with familiar face, will guide Bulldog runners

Tish Bloomer, a former BHS track star, replaces longtime coach Suzy Cole

For the first time in almost a dozen years the Baker cross country teams will take the course without Suzy Cole at the helm.

Cole stepped down after last season to coach the Bulldogs’ junior varsity volleyball squad. In her place will be Tish (Henes) Bloomer.


Baker girls face challenge of defending two-time championship

Baker girls soccer coach DeeDee Clarke’s team might feel like it has a bull’s-eye on its backs this fall.

“Everybody’s going to be after us,” Clarke said. “Because we’re defending champs and because we lost nine players to graduation.”


Soccer squad ready for wins

Anthony Washington is in his second year as coach of the boys soccer program at Baker High School — a job he hopes to hold for some years to come.

A year ago Washington walked into a position that had changed hands numerous times over the past few seasons, and the program had fallen upon hard times in recent years.


Johnson earns starting spot for Beavers against Vikings

Last season Grant Johnson walked on as a redshirt freshman for the Oregon State University football team.

The 2007 Baker High School graduate didn’t play in a game until playing offensive center the entire fourth quarter against Washington State Oct. 11.

Spartans rely on experience

HALFWAY — With four returning starters, Pine-Eagle’s volleyball squad is looking to move up and challenge for a top spot in the Old Oregon League.

“Last year we gained some experience. I’ve got four of my six starters, and one player who swung from JV to varsity,” said Cindy Plano, the third-year Pine-Eagle coach.
