Baker went the extra mile — literally — Saturday to retain possession of the Greater Oregon League baseball championship.

The Bulldogs and La Grande split Friday’s regular-season finale doubleheader, forcing a one-game playoff.

Friday, Baker won the first game 3-1 but dropped the second game 8-7, leaving the two I-84 rivals tied for the GOL lead.

It took a little longer than expected, but Baker finally sent five Bulldogs to next weekend’s Special District 4 4A/3A/2A/1A tennis tournament at the Tri-City Court Club at Kennewick, Wash.

Singles player Grace Huggins, girls doubles Hannah Wilson and Lena Bowers, and boys doubles Brandon Stairs and Ryan Schwin advanced from the sub-district playoffs at Ontario.

Led by a trio of individual first-place finishes from Porter Cline and Kalani Heiser, the Baker boys claimed the team championship at the Baker Invitational track and field meet Friday at BHS.

Porter won two events — the 100 in a time of 11.04, and the pole vault with a vault of 13 feet.

Heiser claimed the boys shot with a toss of 47 feet, 11.5 inches.

The Bulldogs finished with 96.5 team points, 10 more than second-place Ontario in the 21-team meet.

The Baker girls placed seventh in their half of the meet. Vale won the girls team crown.

Baker maintained its share of first place in the Greater Oregon League baseball standings Thursday by sweeping Mac-Hi 11-1 and 4-1 at the Baker Sports Complex.

The sweep improves Baker’s GOL record to 8-2 with a doubleheader remaining at La Grande May 15. La Grande currently is 6-2 and plays Ontario in a twinbill Saturday.

The Baker tennis teams closed out the regular season Friday and Saturday by hosting Ontario and La Grande at the Ash Grove Complex.

Friday, the Baker girls defeated Ontario 5-0 but the boys lost 3-2.

Saturday, the girls won 4-0 but the boys fell 4-0.

The Baker YMCA swim team placed third at the annual Baker Dive and Dash meet Sunday at Sam-O Swim Center.

Baker placed second in the girls division and fifth in the boys for a combined third-place finish.

Baker spotted New Plymouth a 4-0 first-inning lead then rallied to earn a 9-4 nonleague baseball win Thursday at the Baker Sports Complex.

The Bulldogs trailed 4-0 entering the bottom of the fourth inning before rallying to tie the game.


BHS GOLF: Baker boys take second at home invitational

S. John Collins / Baker City Herald Bakerís Rylee Gassin led Baker Monday.

The Baker boys golf team claimed second place at its own invitational Monday afternoon at Quail Ridge Golf Course.

Rylee Gassin carded a round of 86 to lead the Bulldogs. Baker finished with a team score of 361, 19 strokes behind first-place Weiser, Idaho.

Homedale, Idaho, finished third at 370, and Mac-Hi fourth at 382.

Baker’s other individual scores were: Shaun Lepley, 87; Cayn Osborn, 93; Parker Turk, 95; and Taylor Folkman, 101. Baker’s JV scores: Drew Story, 98; Zane Mahoney, 105; Tabor Baldwin, 107; Austin Rasmussen, 124; Morgan Scillacci, 141.

Playing four games in less than 24 hours, Baker’s baseball team was worn out by Saturday evening at the Baker Sports Complex.

Friday, the Bulldogs hosted La Grande in a Greater Oregon League twinbill, splitting the games. Baker won the first game 9-3, but lost the second 4-2 in 9 innings.

Baker swept a Greater Oregon League track and field triangular meet Friday at the BHS track.

Baker won the boys team championship with 468.5 points. Ontario was second at 349.5, and La Grande third at 343.

Baker won the girls title with 462.5 points, followed by Ontario (341.5) and La Grande (333).
