Petry wins consolation title

Baker’s Courtney Petry won the consolation championship at the Clas 4A/3A/2A/1A state tennis tournament Saturday at the University of Oregon in Eugene.

Petry,  a junior, defeated Philomath’s Hannah Hellberg 8-6 to win the title.

Petry, in her third state appearance, lost 6-4, 6-0 to third-seed Maggie Schein in her opening match Friday.

That dropped Petry into consolation play.

In her first match Petry defeated Maiki Jung of Estacada 8-5. She followed that with an 8-0 win over Molalla’s Kritina Morris in the consolation semifinals.

“Courtney played the third-seeded player close,” said Baker coach George Keister.

“Then in consolation play she just played better and better. She kept the presure on her opponents.”

Petry’s effort was good enough for Baker to finish tied with Sisters and North Bend for 11th in the girls standings with two points.

Baker boys

Four Baker boys didn’t score a team point at the state tournament. But, Keister said, they gained valuable experience.

Baker doubles Trenton Howard and Nathan Eiselein lost their first match 6-1, 7-5 to Mario Aparicio and Luis Magana of Umatilla.

Then, in conosolation action, Howard and Eiselein lost 8-6 toBrandon Kruk and Loc Nguyen of Canyonville Christian Academy.

Jordan Curtis lost his opener 7-6 (7), 6-1 to Ben Fullhart of Sisters.

Dan Sizer dropped his opener 6-1, 6-4 to second-seed Al Fehr of Henley. Sizer then lost 8-4 to Jacob Hampton of Stayton in consolation play.

“Only Dan had been to state before,” Keister said.

“The guys gave it a good try. I think they were a little awe struck.

“I told them to try to take it all in. When they see it for themselves it’s just a great thing; a great experience.”

Oregon Episcopal won the girls team championship, and Catlin Gabel the boys.
