Pine-Eagle girls place third

Pine-Eagle rebounded from a disappointing opening game to earn third place at the District 7-1A girls basketball tournament Saturday.

The Spartans defeated Wallowa 55-47 in the Baker High School gym to gain the third berth in the Class 1A state first round of the playoffs.

Three points by Kaylee Holmstead and a basket by Kristen Gulick gave Pine-Eagle a quick 5-0 lead. Chelsie Gulick added a pair of baskets in the period as Pine-Eagle constructed a 12-5 lead at the break.

The Spartans then used balanced inside scoring from Holmstead, Alicia Marlow an McKenzie Bell to add to the lead. Chelsie Gulick then scored the final four points of the first half as Pine-Eagle built a 31-16 halftime lead.

Pine-Eagle still led by 15 points after three periods. Wallowa then made a brief run. The Cougars outscored Pine-Eagle 21-14 in the fourth quarter, but it wasn’t enough.

Cheslie Gulick led Pine-Eagle with 11 points. Holmstead added 10.

McKenzie Shelton topped Wallowa with 10 points.
