Pine-Eagle wrestlers rule

Pine-Eagle wrestlers ruled the Elgin tournament Friday and Saturday at Elgin High School. The Spartans took six individual championships and placed nine wrestlers to win the tournament crown. “We kind of dominated the tournament,” said Spartans coach Blake Dennis. “We had some kids really step it up.” Earning titles were Devin Thorn (119 pounds), Nathan Tanaka (152), Kyle Dennis (160), Richie Gonzales (171), Lucas Powell (215) and Daniel Minarich (285). For Powell and Minarich, Dennis said, it was their first career titles. Kipp Miller placed second at 152, with his only loss to Tanaka in the title match. Cody Powell finished third at 145, and Vern Garrett fourth at 215. Chadden Luebberke and Spencer Waterland also wrestled for the Spartans. The Spartans won 25 of 28 matches. The eight-team tournament used pods form Friday’s competition. The winners then advanced to the bracket action Saturday. Pine-Eagle travels to Ontario Wednesday for another tournament. Baker also will wrestle at Ontario that day.
