Powder, Nixyaawii win consolation games

Nixyaawii and Powder Valley advanced to the fourth-place contest at the Class 1A state boys basketball tournament Friday at Baker High School.

Nixyaawii eliminated Umpqua Valley Christian 87-70 in Friday’s semifinals. Powder Valley eliminated Ione 81-63 in the other semifinal.


Nixyaawii 87, UVC 70

Trailing 38-34 at halftime, Nixyaawii outscored UVC 34-14 in the third quarter to break the game open.

Isaiah Case led the Golden Eagles with 12 points in the third period, all on four three-point baskets.

Joe Crawford and Shawn Simpson each added eight points in the quarter as Nixyaawii built a 68-52 cushion.

Simpson led Nixyaawii with 23 points and five assists. Case added 21 points and three assists. Ashton Picard had 17 points and eight rebounds, and Crawford 16 points and three assists.

Austin Stone led UVC with 26 points. Colton Claughton added 16 points and eight rebounds, Alex Barnhart 14 points, and Zack Medak eight rebounds.

Powder Valley 81, Ione 63

Powder Valley trailed by as many as nine points in the first quarter and trailed 33-32 at halftime.

Then the Badgers exploded to outscore Ione 49-30 in the second half.

The teams battled through five ties in the third period before Powder’s Trenton Dixon scored the final five points of the quarter to give Powder Valley a 52-47 edge.

Dixon finished with 39 points, 18 rebounds, three blocked shots and two assists.

Peter Colton added 10 points and seven rebounds, and Lei Allen eight rebounds. The Badgers outrebounded Ione 53-36.

Matt Hams led Ion e with 19 points. Zac Orem added 15 points, and R.J. Ramos 10.
