COVE — Powder Valley used a solid passing game and a tough defense to hand Cove a 55-18 Old Oregon League football loss Friday.

Powder Valley built a 27-0 lead after one period and never looked back.

Chace Dixon led the Badgers’ defense with 14 tackles, including five for a loss. Quin Stephens had 13 tackles and two sacks, and Jake Grammon 12 tackles and a pair of sacks.

“I thought our defense came out and set the tone for us,” said Powder Valley coach Dan Townsend.

“Grammon, Stephens and Dixon made plays for us all day long on the defensive side of the ball. The defensive starters played a strong disciplined game, and it was nice getting the younger guys a lot of time in the second half,” Townsend said.

The Powder coach also had praise for his offense.

“The boys did a great job this weekend. Chace Dixon had one of his best games of the year. Hitting on 20 passes. Our offensive line did a great job of picking up the Cove blitzers,” Townsend said.

“Cove prepared very well for the game putting a lot of pressure on us up the middle all night. The line made some big adjustments during the game which really opened up the passing game. “

Dixon finished 20-of-30 passing for 301 yards and five touchdowns.

Stephens had two touchdowns receiving, and one touchdown rushing.

Tyler Robinson had two receiving touchdowns, and one defensive score.

“Having the big receivers (Tyler Robinson 6-3,  Grammon 6-3, Stephens 6-1 and Brock Jones 6-1) is a huge asset for us and over the last 2 weeks the guys have worked hard on running better routes and making plays. Each week we are improving and that’s fun to watch,” Townsend said.

Jones also caught a TD aerial.

Powder Valley (2-1 in OOL play) travels to Wallowa Friday.
