Powder boys win Union title

UNION — Powder Valley opened defense of its Class 1A boys basketball title during the weekend by winning the championship at the Union tournament.

The Badgers opened play Friday with an 80-41 win over Cove. Powder Valley then topped Union 77-59 in Saturday’s title game.


Second quarter sparks win

Leading 18-10, Powder outscored Cove 31-6 in the second quarter to break Friday’s game wide open.

“We shot pretty well in the second quarter,” said Powder coach Kyle Dixon.

Trenton Dixon scored 13 of his game-high 26 points in the period. Lei Allen added five of his nine points in the quarter.

Peter Colton added 13 points, and Gavin Kandle 11 for the Badgers.

Another first-half streak

The second quarter again proved hot for the Badgers Saturday against Union.

Leading 23-17, Powder Valley outscored the Bobcats 22-12 in the period to take a 45-29 halftime edge.

“The second quarter has been good for us so far,” Dixon said. “I thought Levi Allen played an outstanding game. He played great defense, and hit back-to-back three-pointers to spark the second quarter run.”

Trenton Dixon led Powder with 29 points. Gavin Kandle added 12, Bryson Kandle 11 and Colton 11.
