SWIMMING: Baker girls third, boys fourth at Baker Invitational

By GERRY STEELE

Of the Baker City Herald

Baker High School swimming fans got their first look at the Baker swimmers in their home waters Saturday at the annual Baker Invitational meet at Sam-O Swim Center.

The Baker girls placed third in the four-way meet with 54 points, and the Baker boys fourth with 35. La Grande won both halves of the meet. Pendleton and Hermiston were the other competitors.

Baker's lone individual first was earned by the Bulldogs' boys 400 freestyle relay team with a 3:43.71 clocking.

Kayla Joseph and Gretchen Daugherty each earned a second-place honor.

Joseph set her all-time fastest time in placing second in the 100-yard breaststroke in a time of 1:16.49. She was nipped at the wire by La Grande's Robyn Miller Saturday.

Daugherty was clocked in 29.19 to take second in the 50-yard freestyle.

The Bulldogs earned six third-place awards. Daugherty was third in the 100 freestyle (1:04.24), and Jennifer Young in the 100 backstroke (1:21.68).

The girls 200 freestyle relay (2:03.06), 200 medley relay (2:17.39) and 400 freestyle relay (4:58.92) and the boys 200 freestyle relay (2:09.46) also placed third.

The meet was delayed for about 30 minutes two events into the action when Hermiston swimmer Margie Harris collapsed near the starting area after completing her race.

Officials worked on Harris, and the Baker City ambulance was called to transport her to the hospital. Officials speculated that the strain from competing and the elevated water temperature caused Harris to faint. (The water temperature was 85 degrees Saturday. It is normally closer to 79 degrees.)

Harris returned to the meet later Saturday, still with wobbly legs. She was assisted by two Hermiston coaches to rejoin her teammates.

Baker's next action is Saturday at the La Grande Invitational, beginning at noon.
