South wins Class 4A baseball series

ROSEBURG — The South swept a doubleheader Sunday to edge the North 2 games to 1 in the Class 4A all-star baseball series at Roseburg.

Sunday, the South, coached by Baker coach Dan Blankenship, defeated the North 7-6 and 5-2. The North edged the South in a single nine-inning game 9-4 on Saturday.

Two former Bulldogs, Derek Blankenship and Matt Gorrell, were members of the South roster.

In Sunday’s first game, Blankenship doubled, walked and scored a run. He played shortstop most of the game before pitching the seventh inning to gain the win on the mound.

Gorrell was 0-for-2 while catching most of the game.

In the second game, Blankenship led off the top of  the fourth with a double that helped the South take an early 3-0 lead. Blankenship again played shortstop and Gorrell caught.

Blankenship did not play Saturday because he was playing in the Class 4A basketball all-star series. (See story above). Gorrell caught the latter portion of Saturday’s game.
