Spartan girls sweep Tigers

Pine-Eagle swept a pair of non-league girls basketball games from Dayville-Monument last weekend at Halfway.

Friday, the Spartans won 49-18, and Saturday 48-26.

“The team concept worked well all weekend,” said Pine-Eagle coach Roger Gulick. “Everybody played pretty well.”

Friday, the Spartans jumped out to a 13-3 lead after one period, but led just 19-12 at halftime.

“We played a really good first quarter, but a terrible second quarter,” Gulick said.

Then the Spartans bolted from the gate in the third period, outscoring the Tigers 20-2. Bri Thatcher and Chelsie Gulick combined to score 14 of the 20 points in the period.

Gulick finished with 17 points, and Thatcher 10.

Saturday, Pine-Eagle jumped to an 11-0 lead after one quarter.

“It was pretty much the same thing as Friday,” Gulick said.

“We worked on our full-court man defense and it showed up pretty good. We kind of overwhelmed them in the first half.”

Pine-Eagle led 25-7 at halftime.

Gulick again led the Spartans with 16 points. Lena Carr added 10.

Pine-Eagle (3-1) hosts Nixyaawii Tuesday.
