Spartan grapplers take seventh

PORTLAND — Pine-Eagle placed seventh at the Class 2A/1A state wrestling tournament Saturday at Memorial Coliseum.

The Spartans finished with 45 points. Culver won the team championship with 139.5.

Three Spartans placed in their respective weight divisions.

Kyle Dennis, the top seed at 160 pounds, placed second after losing 10-7 to second seed Dillon Arnpriester of Glendale in the title match.

Dennis defeated Austin Totten of Bonanza 11-1 in his opening match. He then pinned Colby Jepsen of Central Linn in the semifinals.

Devin Thorn, seeded third at 119, placed third by defeating Jesus Jara of Bonanza 13-3 Saturday.

Thorn lost his opening match by fall to Ryan Kasch of Culver. He then pinned Abe Smith of Scio to reach the third-place match.

Daniel Minarich (285) placed fourth.

Minarich lost 5-1 to Aaron Bowles of Oakridge in his first match. He then pinned Seth Ballaine of Lakeview and Cameron Princena of Enterprise/Wallowa to reach the third-place match.

There, Minarich lost 12-4 to Trent Walker of Glendale.

Three other Spartans competed at Portland.

Cody Powell (145) lost by tech fall to third seed Jay Lysne of Lakeview, pinned Mark LaCoste of Central Linn, then was pinned by Josh Williams of Crane.

Richie Gonzalez (171) lost 9-2 to Giles Ellett of Irrigon and 10-3 to Kamren DeMarce of Lowell.

Lucas Powell (215) lost 15-3 to J.R. Renner of Corbett, pinned Zach Welch of North Douglas and was pinned by Zack Reid of Riddle.
