Pine-Eagle continued its solid wrestling season Saturday, placing fifth at the Oregon Wrestling Classic in Redmond. The Spartans defeated Central Linn 48-28 to take fifth place in the Class 2A/1A division. Pine-Eagle opened tournament action Friday by topping Lakeview 40-27. The Spartans then tied Heppner 42-42 but advanced on criteria points. Saturday, the Spartans lost 48-36 to Crane, giving up 24 points on forfeits. Pine-Eagle then fell 42-21 to Scio. “All in all I was hoping we’d make a good showing at the Classic and we definitely did,” said Pine-Eagle coach Blake Dennis. “The kids continue to wrestle well.” Devon Thorn won all five of his matches at 119/125 pounds. Kyle Dennis pinned four opponents to win all of his matches at 171/189. Vern Garrett finished 2-0 at 215, and Spencer Waterland 1-0 at 171/189. Richie Gonzales finished 4-1 at 171/189, Daniel Minarich 3-1 at 285, Chadden Luebberke 3-2 at 130/135, Lucas Powell 2-1 at 215, Kipp Miller 2-3 at 152/160, Charlie McCullough 1-2 at 135/140, and Nathan Tanaka 1-4 at 152/160. Pine-Eagle competes at a tournament in Orofino, Idaho, Friday and Saturday. |
