Pine-Eagle earned second-place honors Saturday at the Class 1A state wrestling tournament at Crane. The Spartans totaled 176.5 points, trailing only the host Mustangs (221.5) in the team standings. “We had a strong sowing,” said Pine-Eagle coach Blake Dennis. “Everybody placed. It was the first time we had all 13 of our wrestlers at a tournament for a while.” Kyle Dennis, Lucas Powell and Daniel Minarich all won individual titles at Crane. Dennis, wrestling for the first time in almost a month, won all three of his matches to win at 160 pounds. Dennis is 20-0 this season. Powell won both of his matches to win at 215 pounds. He is 23-7 on the season. “Lucas continues to wrestle well,” Coach Dennis said. Powell defeated teammate Vern Garrett (2-1) for the 215 title. Minarich (20-10 on the season) also was 2-0 at Crane. “My giant killer. That’s what I’m calling him now,” Coach Dennis said. Three Spartans placed second — Devon Thorne (119), Richie Gonzalez (171) and Garrett (215). Four Pine-Eagle wrestlers took third — Chadden Luebberke (130), Jesse Lawrence (140), Cody Powell (145) and Kipp Miller (152). Two took fourth — Nathan Tanaka (152) and Spencer Waterland (189). Charlie McCulloch (135) placed fifth. The Spartans travel to a tournament at Wallowa Friday. |
