Spartans send six to state

UNION — Pine-Eagle’s school record-setting performance earned the Spartans third place at the District 4 wrestling tournament Saturday at Union High School.

The Spartans will send six wrestlers to the Class 2A state tournament Friday and Saturday at Memorial Coliseum in Portland.

Kyle Dennis (160 pounds), Richie Gonzales (171), Lucas Powell (215) and Daniel Minarich (285) advance to state as district champions.

Devin Thorn (119) and Cody Powell (145) go to state as district runnersup.

“Getting six through to state might be the second most we’ve had since the nine in 1976,” said Pine-Eagle coach Blake Dennis.

“We had a pretty good district tournament. We only had 10 wrestlers and six are going to state.”

Dennis said the four district champions are a single-season school record for Pine-Eagle. The Spartans had three champions in 1976, 2002 and 2004.

Kyle Dennis, a junior, is a three-time district champion and was named outstanding wrestler at this year’s tournament.

Thorn is making his third trip to state in four years, and Cody Powell also went to state last year.

The Spartans added three fourth-place district placers in Chaeden Luebberke (130), Jesse Lawrence (135) and Kipp Miller (152). Spencer Waterland (189) placed sixth.
