Golf teams prepare for district

Baker High School’s boys and girls golf teams head to Wildhorse golf course in Pendleton on Monday and Tuesday for the district golf competition.  The four-team Greater Oregon League will send the top two boys teams on to the 4A state golf tournament.

“We’ve been consistently second place when we’ve played all four GOL teams,” said Mike Long, Baker golf coach.  “The nice thing is we’re shooting some of the lowest scores of the season. I’m still trying to figure out who’s going.  We have about eight kids in the running.”

The boys team last played in the Vale tournament on Friday, April 30.  The boys home match scheduled for Wednesday, May 5 was cancelled due to weather.

Baker girls varsity golf team also cancelled their Wednesday match which was scheduled at Ontario.  They will compete in a field of 17 teams that make up Special district 7 at Wildhorse on Monday and Tuesday, where the top two teams and top three individuals who are not members of qualifying teams will advance to the 4A state girls golf contest.   Long said of the girls’ district golf prospects, “We should be able to take a couple of individuals –we definitely have girls that are capable.”

Baseball doubleheader Saturday

There is a lot at stake when Baker and La Grande take the baseball diamond Saturday at Optimist Field.

The Bulldogs and Tigers both enter the game 5-3 in Greater Oregon League play. Ontario also sits at 5-3 in the GOL as they prepare for a twin bill with Mac-Hi this weekend. Baker and La Grande split the two games they played earlier this season. The Bulldogs took Game 1 5-4 after rallying from a 4-1 deficit to score three runs in the fifth and one in the sixth to steal the win.

The Tigers were able to bounce back in the second game, however, winning 9-4 and giving Baker its first loss of the year.

But no matter what the numbers indicate, one thing is for sure: when the Bulldogs and the Tigers are on the same field or in the same gym, thrilling games are bound to happen.

Saturday should be no different, and a couple of must-win games for both teams just adds to the excitement.

First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. for Game 1. Game 2 is set to begin at 3 p.m.
