Sports briefs: Baker boys seventh

VALE — Baker finished seventh at the Vale Invitational boys golf tournament Friday.

The Bulldogs shot a score of 378. Parma, Idaho, won the 9-team tournament with a score of 268.

Adam Lehman led Baker with an 88. Dru Simonski-Davis shot 92, Luke Buehler 96, Parker Warner 102, and Jared Maxwell 106. Donavan Spikerman shot 112, and Kevin Fraser 118 for the Baker junior varsity.

“The kids played a lot better than their score showed,” said Baker coach Scott Warner. “The top three kids played well, but just didn’t score that well.”

Baker hosts its own invitational Wednesday at 12:30 p.m. at Quail Ridge Golf Course.


Baker JV boys sweep Mac-Hi

MILTON-FREEWATER — Baker swept a junior varsity baseball doubleheader from Mac-Hi Friday, 10-2 and 22-3.

Coleman Lay was the winning pitcher in the opener. Lay, Trenton Dixon and Anthony Shankle each slugged a two-run home run in the game. Justin Durflinger was 3-for-4 with three doubles.

Durflinger was the winning pitcher in the nightcap. Colten Richards caught both games. Durflinger had four hits including a double and solo homer. Lay added another two-run homer, and Dixon a solo homer. Taylor McEnroe was 3-for-4.

Baker finished the game with 20 hits, nine for extra bases.

The Bulldogs, 14-2 overall, host Grant Union in a doubleheader Tuesday at the Baker Sports Complex.


Rain raises havoc with schedule

Baker’s baseball game against Burns and tennis match against Vale, rained out earlier, have been rescheduled.

Baker will host Vale today at 3 p.m. in the tennis match at the Ash Grove courts.

The Bulldogs will host Burns in a single baseball game May 12 at the Baker Sports Complex. The JV games postponed earlier will not be rescheduled.

Saturday’s tennis match with Fruitland, Idaho, and the freshman baseball doubleheader with La Grande also were postponed by rain. No word on possible rescheduling was available.

Baker’s junior varsity softball games against Mac-Hi scheduled last Friday also were not played because Mac-Hi didn’t have enough available players.


Baker JV runners earn four firsts

Baker earned four firsts, and Powder Valley one, Friday at the Baker junior varsity track and field meet at BHS.

Baker’s Tori Wirth won the girls shot and discus, Caroline Ninove the tripl jump and Jake Sandefur the boys pole vault.

Powder Valley’s Kate Jones won the girls 100hurdles.

Locos take fourth, fifth at Harper

HARPER — Huntington earned a pair of firsts Friday at the High Desert League track and field meet at Harper High School.

Tonya Broam won the girls shot, and the Locos boys 4x400 relay team also took first.

Huntington finished fourth in the girls standings, and fifth in the boys.

Huntington’s Merritt places first

HARPER — Devin Merritt won the boys high jump for Huntington’s only first-place finish Friday att he High Desert League Junior High School track and field meet.

Merritt cleared 4 feet, 10 inches for his win.

Huntington finished fourth in the boys team standings, and fifth in the girls.

Ryder third at Firebird qualifying

BOISE — Wayne Ryder’s ’55 Pickup was third in Top Sportsman qualifying Friday and Saturday at the 39th annual NAPA Auto Parts Ignitor competition at Firebird Raceway.

Ryder’s time was7.154 at 188.75 miles per hour.


Sells throwing well for WWCC

WALLA WALLA — Luke Sells, a former Baker left-hander, is throwing well for the Walla Walla Community College baseball team.

Through April 29, Sells was 0-0 with a 3.52 earned-run average. In 7.67 innings in six games he struck out three, walked three, allowed eight hits and four runs.
