Baker beats Ontario, claims GOL crown

Some fans were comparing the Baker Bulldogs to the Boston Red Sox Friday evening at Bulldog Memorial Stadium. After all, Boston broke Babe Ruth's "Curse of the Bambino" to win the World Series. Friday, Baker broke a curse of its own, defeating Ontario 42-7 to claim the Greater Oregon League football championship.

Baker's win was its first over Ontario since 1998. And, that 1998 victory was the Bulldogs' only win over Ontario since 1993.

The win clinches the GOL title for the Bulldogs (4-0 in the GOL, 7-1 overall), and gives them a first-round bye in the Class 3A playoffs. Baker closes out the regular season at Burns Friday, then has a week off before hosting a playoff game on Nov. 19 or 20.

Pine-Eagle clinches playoff berth

HALFWAY — Look out, Pine-Eagle football opponents: the Spartans just might be peaking at the right time for a long playoff run.

Two weeks ago, the Spartans knew they had to take care of business against Cove and Joseph if they were to have any chance of making the Class 1A state playoffs. Last week, the Spartans eliminated Cove from contention, then Friday Pine-Eagle buried Joseph 74-32 to claim the Old Oregon League's second state berth behind Wallowa.

Girls win sixth straight cross country title, boys earn state berth

Baker cross country coach Suzy Cole may have summed it up best.

"Wow," she said. "You kind of needed to be here to appreciate it all."

That was shortly after the Baker girls claimed their sixth straight Greater Oregon League district cross country title, edging La Grande 29-31 at Quail Ridge Golf Course. The Bulldogs also will be making their sixth consecutive trip to the Class 3A meet at Lane Community College in Eugene Nov. 6.

And they'll have company. The Baker boys took second at district to earn their first state trip as a team since 2001.
