Team Rudi 7th at Walla Walla

The Team Rudi Diamondbacks finished seventh at the Walla Walla Bruins American Legion baseball tournament Sunday at Walla Walla.

Team Rudi defeated Bonney Lake, Wash. 10-0 in the seventh-place game. In other games, Team Rudi defeated Oak Harbor 6-5, lost to Lakeside 5-4, edged Seattle Striek Zone 7-6, and lost to Walla Walla 8-6.

“It was a good tournament, ran pretty well,” said Team Rudi coach Dan Blankenship.

“I felt that if we hadn’t run into problems with Derek (Blankenship) hurting his back we would have done our pitching a little different and probably would have been able to get back into the winners bracket. The guys we had left just ran out of gas.

“They were all good teams we played, and well played games,” Blankenship said. “It was a good experience and gave our younger pitchers more innings.”

Team Rudi 6, Oak Harbor 5

Trailing 4-1 in the fourth, Team Rudi scored two runs in the bottom of the inning and three more in the fifth.

In the fourth, Blankenship’s sacrifice fly and Dekker Smith’s single plated two runs.

In the fifth, Stephen Talbot had a two-run double. Blankenship singled and scored the other run when the first baseman held the ball on a steal play.

Will Barr got Team Rudi started with a solo home run in the third.

Coleman Lay picked up the win in relief, and Smith got the save.

Lakeside 5, Team Rudi 4

Lakeside built a 5-0 lead before Team Rudi rallied.

Trace Richardson had a bases-loaded triple for three RBIs, and Barr added a run-scoring single.

Team Rudi pitchers issued 10 walks in the game.

“We just walked too many people,” Blankenship said. “What’s the saying ‘walks kill’.”

Team Rudi 7, Strike Zone 6

Team Rudi led 7-6 with one out and the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh. Derek Blankenship came on in relief of Smith and got the next hitter to ground out. He then struck out the final batter for the save.

Blankenship also injured his back in this game and was unavailable for Sunday’s contest.

“We made the game interesting, close,” said Coach Blankenship.

Talbot led Team Rudi with a three-run homer. Justin Durflinger added two hits and two RBIs.

Walla Walla 8, Team Rudi 6

Team Rudi rallied to take a 6-5 lead in the fifth inning, but Walla Walla scored three times in the sixth for th ewinning margin.

Lay led the Diamondbacks with three hits and two RBIs. Barr added a double and two RBIs, and Richardson two hits including a double.

Team Rudi 10, Bonney Lake 0

Team Rudi was down to just nine players with several regulars traveling to Seaside for a summer basketball tournament, and Blankenship’s injury.

So former Bulldogs Jordan Harlow, Cole Brown and Grant Marcum joined the team for the final game.

Harlow had a three-run triple in Team Rudi’s 7-run second inning. Brown was the winning pitcher.

Richardson and Durflinger each had a pair of hits.

Team Rudi (8-3) travels to Burns Tuesday for a doubleheader.
