Tennis teams split with Pendleton

By GERRY STEELE

Of the Baker City Herald

Baker split a non-league tennis match at Pendleton Monday, winning the boys match 5-3, but dropping the girls match 6-2.

Baker coach Thom Van Artsdalen said overall, the Bulldogs played several close matches against the Class 4A Buckaroos. Four matches went to a tie-breaker before deciding the outcome.

In boys singles, Jed Rembold and Mitch Grove each won in straight sets, as did Bakers double teams of Michael Van Artsdalen and Joel Cummings, Austin McKnight and Brady Romvedt, and Jace Wheeler and Jason Barker.

It was Jasons first varsity match, and Jace and Jasons first match together, Van Artsdalen said. I thought they did really well.

In the girls match, Baker won just one singles and one doubles match.

Lana Ho won her singles match in straight sets. Christa Van Artsdalen and Kelly Bogart also needed just two sets to win.

Bakers No. 1 doubles team of Katie Bogart and Lanae Sorenson lost their match in two sets, but played well against a tough Pendleton duo.

Those Pendleton girls are two of the best players Ive seen, particularly in Eastern Oregon, Van Artsdalen said. Katie and Lanae played a good match.

Baker travels to Nyssa Thursday and will play the Bulldogs and Homedale, Idaho.
