One streak came to an end, and another was extended Tuesday when Baker hosted Union/Cove in a nonleague softball game at the Baker Sports Complex.

Union/Cove (17-3), ranked fourth in the Class 2A/1A rankings, defeated the Bulldogs 11-6 to end a two-game losing streak.

Baker (8-14) saw its current losing streak extended to four games.

Baker returns to Greater Oregon League play Friday when the Bulldogs travel to La Grande for a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.

Baker and La Grande each is 5-5 in GOL play. Baker needs to sweep the Tigers to earn the league’s No. 2 state berth. If the teams split, they would need a playoff game to determine the berth.

Against Union/Cove,  Baker managed just one hit — Taylor McAdams’ solo home run in the second inning — through six innings.

“We had just one hit through six innings,” said Baker coach Alan McCauley.

“Our bats have been cold for three or four games now. We’re going to have to get them going against La Grande Friday.”

McCauley said Union/Cove pitcher Dani Sturm was a good pitcher, but nothing more than the Bulldogs face in the GOL.

Union/Cove scored first in the top of the second before Baker answered in the bottom of the inning on McAdams’ homer.

Union/Cove then added 10 straight runs, capped off by Sturm’s grand slam homer in the top of the seventh.

Baker finally got its bats going in the bottom of the inning, scoring five runs.

Abi Smith drove in two runs with a double. Courtney Raley, Sierra Howerton and Darion Grove each added an RBI.

Sarah Shankle took the loss in the circle for the Bulldogs.
