Vale tennis teams prove too tough for Baker girls, boys

The Vale Vikings lived up to their reputation as one of the top tennis schools in the region by beating the Baker boys and girls Tuesday afternoon at the Ash Grove Complex.

Vale won the boys match 3-2.

The Vikings prevailed 4-1 in the girls match.

A heavy rain shower arrived about an hour before play was to begin, but coaches and players broomed water off the courts and the sun returned to dry the surface in time for the match to get started about on schedule, Baker Coach George Keister said.

In the boys match, Baker’s No. 2 singles player, Jordan Curtis, beat Garet Stubblefield 6-3, 2-6, 6-2.

In No. 3 singles, Baker’s Ivan Hansen defeated Sam Martin 6-2, 6-2.

Vale swept the two doubles matches.

Despite the loss, Keister said he is pleased that the Bulldogs have progressed despite persistently crummy weather.

“We haven’t played many matches,” he said. “And the weather hampers practice. I tell these guys, don’t be too hard on yourselves.

“They’re making progress, and that’s the way you have to look at it. The goal is to be playing your best tennis when district comes around.”

Keister said he’s confident that Baker’s No. 1 singles player, Dan Sizer, can beat Vale’s Paul Spivey, who won their match Tuesday, 6-2, 6-4.

In the girls match, Baker’s top singles player, Courtney Petry, defeated Jocelyn Noland, 6-3, 6-2.
