Baker played one of its worst overall games of the season Friday, losing a nonleague football game 49-14 to Vale in Bulldog Memorial Stadium.

The Bulldogs (2-4) totalled only 232 total yards and committed three turnovers against Class 3A Vale (6-0).

Vale amassed 449 yards on its way to defeating the final member of the Greater Oregon League. Among its wins, Vale has topped Baker, La Grande, Mac-Hi and Ontario — all four GOL teams.

Baker also continues to battle injuries as it prepares for its GOL opener Friday at home against La Grande.

Quarterback Thomas Hamilton, who missed the bulk of Baker’s game with Pendleton a week earlier, started against Vale.

But, Hamilton, who played mostly on offense, was ineffective when forced to move around in the pocket. He eventually was replaced, as he was against Pendleton, by Keaton Bachman.

Vale took the opening kickoff and marched down the field for a 6-0 lead with 10:36 left in the first quarter.

The score remained 6-0 until Hamilton connected on a 14-yard touchdown pass with Lukas Huggins with 10:25 left in the first half.

Vale then answered on its final two drives of the half to take a 19-6 halftime edge.

Things then went from bad to worse for Baker.

Vale intercepted Hamilton on the first play of the third period and returned the theft for a score.

The Vikings went on to outscore Baker 22-0 in the third quarter, including a safety, to take a 41-6 advantage into the final 12 minutes.

Then, down 49-6, Ben Baxter, who finished with 119 yards rushing, scored from 12 yards out to complete the scoring with 3:17 left in the game.

Friday’s game also will be Baker’s Homecoming and is the Bulldogs’ final regular-season home game.
