Wallowa and Cove win to advance to 7A semifinals

Pine-Eagle and Powder Valley girls eliminated

Wallowa and Cove advanced to the semifinals of the District 7-1A girls basketball tournament Thursday at Baker High School.

Wallowa eliminated Pine-Eagle 54-41, and Cove ended Powder Valley’s season, 35-20.

Wallowa plays Imbler at 12:30 p.m. today. Cove plays Joseph at 6:30 p.m. this evening.

Cougars get first win in OOL

Wallowa, winless during the Old Oregon League regular season, picked an opportune time to gain its first win.

The Cougars took the lead for good, 28-25, with 5:07 left in the third quarter on the first of two straight three-point baskets by Kuulei Delatori.

Wallowa led 33-29 at the end of the period.

Pine-Eagle squeezed to within three points, 37-34, with 4:56 left in the game but that was as close as the Spartans would get.

Forced to foul, the Spartans sent Wallowa to the line 26 times the rest of the game. The Cougars made 15 of those free throws.

Meanwhile, Pine-Eagle managed just one basket and five free throws the rest of the way.

Delatori and Megan Goller each scored three points to help Wallowa take an 11-10 lead at the break.

Then, with Wallowa up 13-10, Pine-Eagle went on a 7-0 run to take a 17-13 lead with 5:48 left in the first half. Kaylee Holmstead scored five of the seven points, and Ce’ Aira Marks the other two.

Wallowa answered with an 8-2 run to end the half for a 23-19 halftime lead. Meagan McKenzie and Skylar Waters each scored four points in that run.

Wallowa’s cause was aided by a large rebounding edge in the first half. The Cougars outrebounded Pine-Eagle 33-22, including 16 offensive boards.

Pine-Eagle got baskets from Holmstead and Jessica Thatcher, and two free throws from Marks, to tie the game at 25-25 with 5:50 left in the third quarter.

That’s when Delatori hit her three-pointers.

Waters led Wallowa with 20 points and nine rebounds. Delatori added 11 points and seven rebounds. Brenna Wallace and Bekah Jamerson each added nine rebounds.

Marks scored 19 points to top Pine-Eagle Holmstead added 10 points. Thatcher and Marks each grabbed a dozen rebounds.
