Wallowa tops Spartans

Wallowa pulled away from Pine-Eagle in the second half Friday, spoiling the Spartans’ Homecoming with a 58-26 Old Oregon League football win at Halfway. Pine-Eagle trailed just 28-26 at halftime, but Wallowa outscored the Spartans 30-0 after halftime. “We couldn’t put much together in the second half,” said Pine-Eagle coach Blake Dennis. “Late in the second half we basically just ran out of gass. We had some turnovers at crucial times, and they scored off our turnovers.” Pine-Eagle quarterback Jake Traw connected on first-quarter tochdown passes to Kyle Dennis and Josh Deen to keep the Spartans within 14-12 at the break. A Traw touchdown run gave Pine-Eagle a brief 18-14 lead in the second quarter. Wallowa then scored twice before Dennis scored on a 20-yard run to pull Pine-Eagle within 28-26 at halftime. The Spartans lost the services of Richie Gonzales in the first quarter when he injured a knee making a block. Coach Dennis said he wasn’t sure how long Gonzales may be sidelined. The Spartans also lost Jesse Lawrence to a broken wrist Saturday during a junior varsity game. Pine-Eagle travels to Joseph for another Old Oregon League contest Friday.
