Wallowa wins battle of unbeatens

Powder Valley hosted Wallowa in a battle of unbeaten Old Oregon League boys basketball teams Saturday at North Powder. When the dust had cleared Wallowa came away with a 71-58 victory.

Wallowa improved to 5-0 in OOL play, and Powder 4-1.

The taller Cougars dominated the rebounding.

“Rebounds killed us, and I think we had 10 turnovers in the first quarter,” said Powder Valley coach Kyle Dixon. “Wallowa is a solid bunch of big guys.”

Wallowa bolted to a 12-3 first-quarter lead before leading 25-14 at the break and 36-24 at halftime.

The Cougars held Powder’s Trenton Dixon to just seven first-half points. Dixon heated up in the second half to finish with 27 points.

Jake Johnson led three Wallowa players in double figures with 25 points.

Powder Valley hosts Cove Friday and Imbler Saturday.
