Mackenzie Warner and Tiffany Burk combined to score more than the entire Mac-Hi team Saturday, leading Baker to a 44-30 Greater Oregon League girls basketball win at Milton-Freewater. Warner, returning from a wrist injury, led the Bulldogs with 18 points. Burk added her best game of the season, tallying 14. The duo combined for 22 of Baker’s 30 first-half points. “I thought we played as well in the first half as we’ve played all year,” said Baker coach Tim Smith. “I was really, really pleased with the way we got off the bus ready to go. We basically put the game away in the first half.” Burk dominated the inside for eight first-quarter points. Warner chipped in five points as the Bulldogs forged a 15-7 lead at the break. Warner added seven points, and Haley Adams four in the second period as Baker increased its lead to 30-15 at halftime. “It was nice to see Tiffany get involved in the scoring,,” Smith said. “And Mackenzie shot the ball well. She does a nice job of leading us.” Baker finished with only 21 turnovers, down from near 40 in each of the Bulldogs past few games. Smith said most of the turnovers came in the third period when the Bulldogs hit a lull. Mac-Hi outscored Baker 9-6 in the period to get within 36-24. But baskets by Warner and Adams to start the fourth quarter turned the momentum back in Baker’s favor. The win moves Baker back into a first-place tie with La Grande for the GOL lead at 2-1. Baker travels to Ontario Tuesday before hosting La Grande Friday.
