West leads East past West

The East took a 10-0 first-quarter lead, then withstood the 97-degree heat and a West comeback to take a 17-13 victory Saturday in the 57th annual East-West Shrine All-Star Football Game at Bulldog Memorial Stadium. Imbler’s Nick West intercepted a Kelly Maguire pass with 1:16 left in the game to insure the East win. The East improved its lead in the overall series to 29-25-3. West, who was inducted into the Shriners prior to the game, picked Maguire’s pass off at the East 26. On the play, Maguire, under pressure, didn’t have time to read that the route wasn’t there. He threw the ball where he expected the receiver to be, but the only person in the area was West. Three running plays then ran out the clock. The East took a 2-0 lead with 9:49 left in the first quarter on a safety when the center snap on a punt attempt sailed over punter Derek Piete’s head and out of the end zone. The East turned the ball over on its next possession, but again forced the West to punt. Lakeview’s Kelly Clemens then engineered a five-play, 99-yard scoring drive. Four running plays moved the ball to the East 31. Clemens then connected with Crane’s Dallen Davies on a 69-yard touchdown play. On the play, Davies, who had gotten behind Piete, maintained his focus on the ball despite it being tipped by Piete. Davies caught the ball, turned around once and sprinted to the end zone. Culver’s Nevin Lewis ran for the two-point conversion giving the East a 10-0 lead with 3:35 left in the first quarter. The score remained 10-0 at halftime thanks to the East defense. The West drove the ball to the East 1 early in the second period. The drive stalled there however when North Valley’s Paul Gutzman stopped Rainier’s Andrew Allen trying to score up the middle. The West had another chance seconds later when the East fumbled the ball away at the East 17. But again the East defense stiffened. The West was forced to attempt a 43-yard field goal that was far short. The East finished the first half with 189 yards total offense, the West just 39 yards. The first half was played under college rules with two 15-minute quarters. The second half was played under two 12-minute quarters to meet Fox Sports Network’s time constraints. Both teams seemed revitalized from the heat in the second half. The West took the opening kickoff and marched down the field to score on a 2-yard run by Allen. Allen, who had scored 17 touchdowns during his senior season, bulled over left tackle for the touchdown. Kyle Kuhnhausen added the conversion kick to pull the West to within 10-7 with 7:37 left in the third quarter. The East answered right back on its next possession, marching 80 yards to regain a 17-7 lead. Newport’s Mark Moore connected with Lewis on a 5-yard TD pass. Illinois Valley’s Lance Tausaga added the PAT kick. The West again responded on a 65-yard scoring drive. The big play on the drive was a 50-yard completion from Maguire to Jared Rue of Banks. Maguire scored from 2-yards out on a quarterback sneak to cut the deficit to 17-13 with 9:41 left in the game.
