The Baker City branch of Bank of America closes its doors Friday for the last time.

The ATM next to the building will remain in operation. Nightly deposit boxes no longer will be accepted, however.

People needing to visit a branch must travel to La Grande from now on. Other transaction options: telephone or online. Closure of this location was announced this summer.

Historic Baker City Inc. has been in talks with B of A regarding the historic Ison Building at Washington Avenue, the site of the branch shutting down today.

Ideally, HBC would like B of A to donate the building instead of selling it to the highest bidder, said Kate Dimon, HBC director.

The Ison Building was listed on an online real estate website and bidding ended in late September.

Dimon envisions the Ison Building as a training ground for students around the state interested in historic building restoration and preservation.

Also part of the plan would be for HBC to move its offices there and provide meeting space - if the corporation decides to donate the building to the local group.

Nothing has been finalized, however, she said.

B of A had no comment about the matter.
