Phone scammer purports to represent Baker City Herald

By Jayson Jacoby, The Baker City Herald

At least four local businesses have received a phone call from a person claiming to represent the Baker City Herald and offering to sell ads for the next Baker County Visitor Guide.

This caller, claiming to work for "Global Publishing," does not represent the Herald. The newspaper is not selling ads for the Visitors Guide at this time.

In at least one case the scammer offered the business a discount for pre-paying for an ad by credit card over the phone. The caller seems to be targeting businesses that have bought ads in the Visitors Guide in the past. The caller has referred to the page number on which the businesses' ads appeared in the Visitor Guide.

At least one of the scam phone calls came from this number: 309-966-4592.

People who get a call from that number should call Baker City Police at 541-523-3644.
