A truckload of biscuits burned on the freeway near Durkee early this morning.

Oregon State Police Sr. Trooper Ed Mercado said the truck driver Giovanni Rosales-Salas, 47, of Orem, Utah, was traveling from Utah to Washington when his truck caught fire in the westbound freeway lanes at Milepost 328. The Huntington Fire Department was dispatched to the scene at 2:30 a.m. today.

OSP and an Oregon Department of Transportation crew also responded to the fire.

Rosales-Salas told Mercado that he pulled off the highway when he noticed his anti-lock braking system light was on. When he got out of the truck, he saw that the left rear tire was burning.

The tractor trailer and the load of biscuits quickly became fully engulfed and were destroyed in the fire. Only the frame and engine block remained this morning.

Mercado said both westbound freeway lanes were closed for about an hour while firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze, which spread to a small amount of grass along the highway.

No one was hurt during the incident.

The right westbound lane remained closed this morning as cleanup continued, but vehicles were traveling through the area in the left lane, Mercado said.
