To the editor:
Little did I know that I was in for a surprise as I left First Presbyterian Church Sunday afternoon. Heading across Fourth and Washington I turned my head and noticed an old truck approaching me. Fortunately, the driver was going slowly and hit the brakes, which squealed, and stopped about 3 feet from me.
As I turned my head away continuing toward the corner, I looked to my left and there approaching me from the north was President Clinton and his entourage. He must have heard the brakes and caught my eye, heading toward me with his hand outstretched. He stopped for a moment as we shook hands and I thanked him for coming to visit.
This was the first time in my 72 years that I've ever had the honor to see a president of the United States up close and personal, much less shake his hand! Of course, I continued on to the Courthouse to hear him speak.
