Letters to the Editor for May 10, 2010

By Chris Collins / The Baker City Herald

Herons failed to return this year

To the editor:

Those of us who look forward to seeing the heron rookery along Pocahontas fill up each spring with returning parents are disappointed this year. There are no herons - at all. Perhaps the rookery was abandoned because activity in the area has increased, such as more driving on the access road, more construction, more tree felling. At any rate, the herons are gone, and no young will be raised this year. The ground squirrel populations in the adjacent pastures will be delighted; the ranch owners not so much. Perhaps the herons will return next year, perhaps not.

Less hate needed

To the editor:

I would like to address the letter by Jamey Hardy in the May 5 Baker City Herald in which she expresses her support for the students and teachers to, "stand up for your beliefs" when it comes to those who have differing opinions than ours.

First of all I want to say that I for one agree with Jamey's opinion 100 percent. I think our world would be so much better off if we all found tolerance and understanding for those who don't always agree with us. A little less hate in this world would go a long way to making it a better place for all of us to live.

However I find it ironic that Jamey doesn't practice what she preaches. Obviously she supports just those who agree with her and not those who have differing opinions. When four of our city councilors "stand up for their beliefs" and vote to fire our city manager, she led the charge to have them recalled. You can't have it both ways Jamey.
