Congrats, Bulldogs

By Jayson Jacoby / The Baker City Herald

The Baker High football team made history last year.

But they weren't satisfied.

Now they are.

After becoming the first Bulldog team to advance to the Class 4A state

championship game, then losing that 2009 title game to undefeated

Marist, the Bulldogs began the 2010 season determined to earn a second

chance.

On Saturday at Hillsboro Stadium they took advantage of that chance.

The Bulldogs beat Douglas 34-20 to claim the state title trophy.

Only a September loss to Fruitland, Idaho's Class 3A champion, blemished Baker's season.

The Bulldogs set a school record with 12 wins to go with that lone loss.

Which isn't to say that Baker breezed through the bulk of its schedule.

The Bulldogs trailed Burns 22-14 at halftime of their Oct. 1 game, but came back to win 26-22.

On Oct. 29, with the Greater Oregon League championship on the line, Baker traveled to La Grande.

The Tigers, buoyed by a raucous Homecoming crowd, took a 19-7 lead in the second quarter.

But the Bulldogs dominated the second half and won 35-19.

Baker had to rally yet again in its semifinal game against Gladstone on Nov. 27.

That's the sort of resiliency most championship teams have.

And the Baker Bulldogs are true champions.
