A family endures a nightmare

What happened to one of Stacy and Jason Bingham's five children would cause any parent to shudder.

That the same medical malady - in essence, a failed heart - could befall two of their daughters, and possibly one of their two sons, well, that seems the stuff of fiction.

Six years ago the Binghams, who live near Haines, watched as their eldest daughter Sierra, then 6, underwent heart transplant surgery at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital in Palo Alto, Calif.

Today the Binghams are there again.

This time the patients are Sierra's younger sister, Lindsey, who's 8, and brother, Gage, who's 3.

Lindsey was fitted with a Berlin heart, an external pump that's used while she awaits a donor heart.

Gage, meanwhile, has had a pacemaker installed.

And the Binghams' two other children - Megan, 10, and Hunter, 5, both have been diagnosed with heart ailments.

The source of the ailments is not known.

We can of course only hope and pray that one day the entire Bingham family will be together, and healthy, back home in Baker County.

In the meantime, though, we're heartened by the response from local residents who are committed to helping the Binghams in any way possible.

A variety of fundraisers are planned for the next few months. In addition, an account has been set up in Lindsey's name at U.S. Bank. Donations can also be sent to Lindsey Lou Heart Fund through Bingham, Bingham and Watt, 2055 Second St., Baker City, OR 97814.

We encourage everyone to help if they can.

Although the cost of this highest level of medical care is daunting indeed, donations will surely help the Binghams as they cope travel and lodging until they can return to Baker Valley with their children.
