Baker wrestlers beat all-comers
Baker entertained the home wrestling fans Friday, sweeping three dual matches at the Baker Invitational in the BHS gym.
The Bulldogs stopped Riverside 43-36, Union 58-15, and the Pendleton JV 56-24.
andquot;It was nice to finally get to wrestle at home,andquot; said Baker coach Dee Gorrell. andquot;We had a nice crowd for the matches. In fact I think it was one of the biggest we've had for a wrestling match for quite a while.andquot; The Bulldogs fielded almost a complete lineup for each dual, missing only wrestlers at 103 and 119 pounds.
andquot;We showed that dual-wise we're pretty well even keel after 119,andquot; Gorrell said.
The Baker coach said the Bulldogs wrestled consistently throughout the evening, with no real highs or lows.
andquot;It was a pretty consistent match with no high stress,andquot; Gorrell said. andquot;Riverside gave us the most problems. We wanted to wrestle them since they are in the GOL with us.
andquot;All of our wrestlers wrestled pretty consistent. We maintained our level and control,andquot; he said.
Pine-Eagle girls beat Imbler, Wallowa
Pine-Eagle received little resistance from Imbler and Wallowa on the way to a pair of Old Oregon League girls basketball wins Friday and Saturday.
The Spartans buried Imbler 81-26 Friday, then stopped Wallowa 67-22 Saturday.
Powder boys sweep season opener
Powder Valley kicked off its Old Oregon League season with wins over Cove and Adrian Friday and Saturday.
Friday, the Badgers stopped Cove 62-47 at Cove. Powder then topped Adrian 55-43 Saturday at North Powder.
Spartans troubled in league openers
Pine-Eagle's return to the Old Oregon League boys basketball wars hit a sour note Friday and Saturday as the Spartans dropped games to Imbler and Wallowa.
Friday, at Imbler, the host team hit the century mark in burying Pine-Eagle 102-37. Saturday, Wallowa came from behind to hand the Spartans a 57-46 loss in Halfway.
Powder girls win two to open season
Powder Valley opened its Old Oregon League girls basketball campaign by sweeping Cove and Adrian Friday and Saturday.
Friday, at Cove, the Badgers came from behind to nip Cove 42-41. Saturday, at home, Powder rolled past Adrian 61-27.
Baker girls sixth at tourney
Baker finished the three-day North Marion girls basketball tournament 1-2 Saturday after losing to Central Linn 45-32.
The Bulldogs, who finished sixth out of 10 teams, opened tournament play Thursday with a 59-40 loss to Estacada. Baker followed that with a 45-35 win over Yamhill-Carlton in consolation play Friday.
Baker boys take fourth
Baker had to settle for fourth place at the Seaside Tournament of Champions boys basketball tournament Saturday afternoon.
The Bulldogs were nipped 60-59 by Seaside in the third-place game. Friday, Baker lost 61-37 to Tillamook in the semifinals.
