Baker used a 12-0 run early in the second quarter to shake away the wintertime blues and went on to defeat Grant Union 64-38 in a non-league girls basketball game Tuesday in the Baker gym.
Leading just 12-9 after the first, the Bulldogs put up four points each from Tana Jayo and Jackie Owens, and two points each from Haley McEnroe and Julia Vaughan to build their lead to 24-11 midway through the second.
andquot;We didn't play well in the first quarter,andquot; said Baker coach Tim Smith. andquot;We came out flat.
andquot;But we battled tough. We blew it open in the second quarter.andquot;
It wasn't that Baker wasn't getting good shots. The Bulldogs just weren't making many of them.
andquot;We had trouble finishing tonight,andquot; Smith said. andquot;The positive thing, though, was that we were getting the shots.
andquot;We need to work on our free throw shooting. And we need to work on converting our high percentage shots. We're getting the shots. We just didn't convert them tonight.andquot;
Smith said the missed shots didn't hurt the Bulldogs much against Grant Union. But that might not be the case against teams like the Oregon City junior varsity, Baker's first opponent Thursday at the Seaside tournament.
Against Grant Union, Baker finished the first half leading 31-20.
Kate Vaughan then scored seven of her team-high 15 points in the third quarter to help the Bulldogs build their cushion to 49-29 entering the final eight minutes.
Baker then increased its lead to as much as 29 points late in the fourth quarter.
Smith was pleased with the Bulldogs' defense.
andquot;I thought we played extremely well on the defensive end of the floor,andquot; he said.
The Bulldogs held Grant Union to 28 percent shooting from the field. The Prospectors also went to the free throw line just three times, making one.
andquot;Our goal is to hold our opponent to under 40 points,andquot; Smith said. andquot;If we can do that we'll win quite a few games.andquot;
Vaughan led Baker with 15 points and nine rebounds. Katie White added nine points and eight boards. Jayo finished with nine points, and Katy Sullivan eight. McEnroe added seven points and six rebounds. All but one Bulldog scored in the game.
