Pine-Eagles varsity and Bakers JV softball teams could have easily qualified as postal delivery workers Saturday afternoon.

While the wet, snowy weather postponed three other baseball or softball doubleheaders involving Baker teams, Pine-Eagle and the Baker JV struggled through rain, snow, wind and wind chill in the teens to complete their twinbill at the Baker Sports Complex.

As about three dozen hearty softball fans huddled together in their winter coats and layers of blankets, Pine-Eagle came away with a 4-3 and 17-10 sweep of the Bulldogs.

In the opener, Pine-Eagle took advantage of three first-inning errors by the young Bulldogs to score two runs.

Thats where the score stood until the bottom of the fourth, when Baker got on the scoreboard.

Amanda Moutsanides walked and stole second. She advance to third on a groundout by Rose Supan. Moutsanides scored when she beat the throw to the plate on a slow roller by Mary Kreger.

Pine-Eagle increased its lead to 3-1 in the top of the fifth. Winning pitcher Stephanie Petersen reached on an error, went to second on a wild pitch, stole third, and scored on another wild pitch.

Baker again cut the deficit to one, 3-2, in the bottom of the sixth. Moutsanides was hit by a pitch and stole second and third. She scored on an RBI single by Supan.

Pine-Eagle scored what proved to be the winning run in the top of the seventh. Petersen singled and went to second on a wild pitch. She came around to score on another Baker error.

Baker made a bid to catch the Spartans in the bottom of the inning, but came up a run short.

Erin Brookshire opened the inning with a single, and scored on a single by Rachel Hill. Lacey Barker and Supan each added singles to load the bases with one out. But Petersen got Kreger to foul out to the catcher, and got Mogan Shira on a comebacker to the circle for the final out.

In the second game, Pine-Eagle exploded for five runs in the top of the first. Three Baker errors and a Petersen RBI single plated the runs.

The Spartans added four more runs in the second on consecutive RBI hits by Christy Bryan, Kelli Morwood and Michelle May.

Baker got three runs back in the bottom of the third. Shira and Hill each drove home a run with groundouts. Anne Hensley added an RBI single.

Pine-Eagle went up 10-3 in the top of the fourth when Lacey Peer scored Holly Gover with a fielders choice grounder.

Baker cut the lead to 10-5 in the bottom of the inning on a two-run single.

Each team added three runs on the fifth. Pine-Eagles scored on a two-run single by Catherine Beam and an RBI hit by Gover. Baker answered with a line drive three-run homer by Brookshire over the left field fence.

Pine-Eagle maintained its lead the rest of the way, thanks, in part, to an RBI double by Petersen in the seventh.

Shawna ONeal added an RBI hit, and Brookshire an RBI with a bases loaded walk for the Bulldogs.
