Class 3A No. 3-ranked Riverside scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning of the second game Saturday to earn a split against Baker in a Greater Oregon League softball doubleheader at Boardman.

The Pirates earned a 2-1 win in the second game after Baker won the opener 5-2.

Alysun Burns opened the Riverside seventh with a single. Then, after Baker pitcher Lacey Barker struck out the next batter attempting to bunt, the next Pirate got the bunt down.

The Baker defense got the batter at first, but Burns scooted all the way around to third on the play.

Burns rounded the bag as if she was going to try to score. The ball was relayed to Baker catcher Ashley Craig at the plate. Craig had a shot at picking Burns off third, but her throw was wide and into left field, allowing Burns to score.

Ashley had a straight shot at her, and made a good play, said Baker coach Steve Bachman. But the throw was off the mark.

Bachman said he was happy with a split, but that the Bulldogs defense has had problems in recent games.

Were making too many errors, he said. We just have to get back on track.

Bachman said the Bulldogs offense also didnt click as well as it could have in the second game.

We didnt take the opportunities we had. We came out flat, he said. We just kind of hung with them. Several times we had runners on and didnt execute.

Bachman said the Bulldogs went down 1-2-3 in three innings, and had as many as five batters in an inning only once.

Baker had six hits in the game. The Bulldogs only run came in the third when Barker tripled and scored on a sacrifice bunt by Ashley Rino.

Barker allowed just three hits, struck out five and walked two.

In the opener, Megan Curtis fired a four-hitter, allowing two unearned runs. Curtis struck out four and walked none.

Both of our pitchers were doing their jobs, Bachman said. We just have to tighten up defensively.

Megan threw a heck of a game, and Lacey pitched a great game too, Bachman said.

Baker had 13 hits in the first game. Nicole Landstrom had three of those hits, and an RBI. Savannah Newman, Jamie Parks and Katie Kuchenbecker each added two hits. Newman had two RBIs.

The Bulldogs took a 3-1 lead after three innings, then added single runs in the fourth and seventh.

Baker travels to Mac-Hi Thursday.

We just have to go down to Mac-Hi and take two, then win our games at home, Bachman said.
