SCAPPOOSE Baker couldnt string together enough offense to keep up with fifth-ranked Scappoose Tuesday in the first round of the OSAA/U.S. Bank Class 3A state softball playoffs.
The Bulldogs fell behind 4-0, then came up just short before dropping a 4-3 contest.
Baker coach Steve Bachman said he didnt know if it was the hot weather (about 92 degrees at game time), nerves, or something else, but the Bulldogs didnt get off on the right foot.
We came out and werent quite with it, he said. And, they have some big girls and hit the ball hard.
Scappoose scored single runs in the first three innings, and one more in the fifth off Baker starter Megan Curtis. Lacey Barker came on in the fifth and shut the Indians down with the bases loaded.
Megan had a little trouble placing the ball, Bachman said. Lacey came in and shut them down.
Bachman said the Bulldogs went down 1-2-3 in the first three innings. Ashley Rino had a bunt single in the fourth, and Ashley Craig a single in the fifth. That was all the offense the Bulldogs could manage before the sixth.
We just didnt muster the offense, Bachman said. We hit the ball hard. We lined out five times in the first four innings.
In the sixth, Barker singled, then three straight errors on balls hit by Tanya Denne, Rino and Savannah Newman resulted in one Baker run. Nicole Landstrom and Beth Hull then followed with back-to-back sacrifice flies to left to drive home the other two runs.
Baker reloaded the bases with two outs. Katie Kuchenbecker then blooped a ball over first base. Bachman said that on most fields the ball would have spun away from the outfielder. But this time the Scappoose right fielder got to the ball and threw Kuchenbecker out by a step at first base to end the inning.
Baker again went down 1-2-3 in the seventh.
Bachman said the Bulldogs gave it a great shot at the end.
We had a great year, going 17-8-1. Thats the most wins weve ever had in a season.
Bachman also said he felt sorry that it was the last game for his six seniors.
They leave us needing to fill in for their ability and knowledge, he said.
