The Baker Bulldogs did something Friday by beating Umatilla that they hadnt done in two years win back to back games.

Baker dominated all aspects of the game in running its season record to 2-0 with a 50-0 romp at an emotionally-charged Bulldog Memorial Stadium (See related story on Page 3). The game ended with 6:06 left in the third quarter by the 45-point mercy rule.

Bakers offense, all but silent in the Bulldogs 30-0 season-opening win over Parma a week earlier, took command of the Class 2A Vikings from the start.

The Bulldogs amassed 382 yards in total offense, 278 on the ground and 104 in the air.

Quarterback Derek Riggs connected with receiver Greg Goodenough on two scoring strikes. Reserve running back Jake Lager added a pair of TD runs, the last ending the game. Riggs and Justin Merritt each added touchdown runs.

Bakers defense, not scored upon this season, added its fourth touchdown of the young season when lineman Mike Lunyou returned a blocked punt 3 yards for the score. The Bulldogs limited Umatilla to just 66 total yards.

Bakers special teams also were on the mark. Place kicker Joe Sullivan was 4 for 4 on conversion kicks; Ethan Bigelow was 2 for 2 on conversion runs.

Baker scored its first touchdown on its second possession, starting on its own 34.

Three running plays moved the ball to the Umatilla 48. Riggs then found Ty Mack with a short pass on the right sideline. Mack made a nifty spin move and rambled all the way to the Viking 12.

Two plays later Riggs found Goodenough with a 13-yard scoring toss.

Umatilla lost two yards on three plays starting from its own 25 following the kickoff. Then, as Viking punter Justin Bissonette was slow to attempt the punt, Bakers Chris Price broke in from the left side and blocked the kick. Lunyou corralled the ball at the 3 and went in for the score.

The first period ended 14-0 Baker.

The Bulldogs scored their third TD four minutes into the second period, overcoming two offensive holding penalties to complete a 57-yard drive.

Again, Riggs found Goodenough, this time for 23 yards and the score.

Baker needed about a minute to score its fourth TD.

Goodenough recovered a Umatilla fumble on the kickoff return, giving Baker the ball on the Viking 27. Three plays later Riggs boosted Bakers lead to 28-0 on a 1-yard run.

Baker went up 35-0 one series later. After forcing a Umatilla punt, the Bulldogs started on the Viking 48. Bigelow then ran through and over Umatilla tacklers to the Umatilla 6. Merritt swept around right end on the next play for the score.

Baker again forced Umatilla to kick, and mounted one last scoring drive before the half.

Starting on the Umatilla 38, the Bulldogs needed six plays to score. Lager did the honors on a 2-yard scamper.

Baker led 44-0 at halftime.

Umatilla opened the third quarter against the Baker reserves and moved the ball down field. Bakers front line players reentered the game and stopped the Vikings on fourth down at the Baker 4.

A motion penalty dropped the Bulldogs back to the 2 before Merritt sprinted through defenders for a 45-yard gain to the 47.

Lager added 16 yards on two more carries before backup quarterback Ty Nichols connected with Lager on a short pass to the Umatilla 16.

Lager then scooted right and into the end zone for the final margin.

Merritt led Baker runners with 92 yards on seven carries. Bigelow added 73 yards, Lager 47, and Sullivan 45. Riggs was 5 of 7 passing for 89 yards. Goodenough caught three passes for 43 yards.

Baker opens Greater Oregon League play Friday hosting No.1-ranked Vale at 7 p.m. at Bulldog Memorial Stadium.
