Bulldogs drop opener

For the second week in a row, penalties and an inability to move the

ball in the "red zone" hurt Baker in non-league football action. A week

earlier, the Bulldogs were able to overcome those problems for a win at

Parma, Idaho. But, Friday at Bulldog Memorial Stadium, Baker fell 20-6

to visiting Weiser, Idaho.

"I thought we moved the ball pretty well, we just didn't finish," said Baker coach Dave Johnson.

"We had three or four good drives, but we just didn't get into the end zone."

Johnson said the Bulldogs played a more physical brand of football against the Wolverines.

"We played more physical, and that's good," he said. "We just have to continue to take steps forward."

Weiser took a 7-0 lead with 5:44 left in the first quarter when Spencer Chandler scooted 19 yards up the middle for a touchdown.

Baker had driven to the Wolverine 18 before giving the ball up on downs.

Weiser increased its lead to 13-0 on the last play of the first quarter on a 39-yard touchdown pass over the middle.

Baker again drove inside Wolverine territory, reaching the Weiser 32 before losing the ball on downs.

The Bulldogs then drove to the Weiser 23 in the final minute of the first half only to lose the ball on a fumble.

Weiser led 13-0 at halftime.

The Wolverines increased their cushion to 20-0 three plays into the second half on a 40-yard pass play.

Baker finally lit up the scoreboard with 4:21 left in the third period after recovering a Weiser fumble at the Wolverine 7.

Two plays later Steven Talbot scored on a 7-yard run.

Johnson said playing teams the caliber of Weiser and Parma can only make the Bulldogs better.

"It's a great opportunity for us," he said. "We've got some things to work on this week, but we're going to come at Nyssa with guns fully loaded."

The Bulldogs (1-1) host Nyssa Friday at 7 p.m. Parma beat Nyssa 35-0 on Friday.
