Quarterback Jordan Harlow throws two TD passes as Baker wins 14-13
VALE -?Baker quarterback Jordan Harlow threw two touchdown passes, and
the Bulldog defense forced three fourth-quarter Vale turnovers in a
14-13 non-league football win Friday.
Trailing 7-0 late in the second quarter, Baker mounted an 80-yard
scoring drive. Harlow connected on a pair of first-down-gaining passes
to Walker Kaseberg on the drive.
The second of those passes gave Baker a first down on the Vale 36. From
there the Bulldogs used six running plays to move the the Viking 18. A
Vale penalty then gave the Bulldogs a first down on the Vale 9 with 46
seconds left in the first half.
Harlow then found Trace Richardson in the corner of the end zone to cut
the deficit to 7-6. Harlow's conversion kick attempt was no good,
leaving Baker down 7-6 at halftime.
Baker took the lead for good with 4:20 left in the third quarter. Again the scoring play started with Harlow's right arm.
Starting on their own 12, the Bulldogs used runs by Steven Talbot to move out to the 32. Harlow then found tight end Dekker Smith in the flat. After making the catch Smith used a pair of downfield blocks from the other Baker receivers to rumble 68 yards for the touchdown. Harlow then connected with Kaseberg for the two-point conversion and a 14-7 Baker lead.
Vale completed the scoring on its next drive when Jarrod Tucker connected with Scotty Brown on a 67-yard halfback option pass to pull within 14-13. But, a bad center snap on the conversion kick forced a hurried attempt that went wide, leaving Baker still on top 14-13.
Vale had a handful of attempts to regain the lead the rest of the way. But each time the Baker defense rose to snuff the Vikings.
On the first, Smith recovered a Tucker fumble at the Baker 36 with 8:42 left in the game.
Then, about two minutes later, Rowdie LaMiller intercepted a Brian Haueter pass at the Baker 42.
Kaseberg later intercepted a Russell Seals pass with about 1:45 left in the game. Baker only had to run the rest of the time off the clock to secure the win.
It was the second game in a row that both LaMiller and Kaseberg had interceptions.
Baker (3-1) travels to Burns for another non-league contest Friday at 7 p.m.
