Baker High School's volleyball team had a quality showing at the La

Grande volleyball tournament Saturday, winning seven of eight games in

pool play and advancing to the championship game before losing to the

host team.

In pool play, Baker topped Ontario, 25-9, Elgin, 25-18, Weston-McEwen,

25-16, Vale 23-21, Weiser 25-7, Columbia, 24-16 and Union, 25-21. The

Bulldogs' only loss during the preliminary round was to La Grande,

17-25.

Games were designed to be played to 25 points, but the teams were on a 20-minute time limit, Baker Coach Marcy Hayes said.

Advancing to bracket play, Baker defeated Vale, 25-15, 22-25 and 15-12, then Union, 25-12, 21-25 and 15-9.

The host Tigers kept the title in La Grande by beating Baker in a tight championship match, 27-25, 25-22.

"We played a good tournament this weekend," Hayes said. "All the girls got a lot of playing time and I think they had fun this weekend.

"We learned a few things that we still need to work on before our league games continue this week."

The Bulldogs host Ontario tonight at the Baker gym. The freshman match begins at 4 p.m.

On Saturday Baker travels to Mac-Hi in another Greater Oregon League matchup. That match begins at noon.
