Bulldog boys cross country team also advances to state meet

Baker successfully defended its Greater

Oregon League girls cross country championship Friday at Eastern Oregon

University in La Grande.

The Bulldogs placed five runners in the top eight to finish the race with 27 points. Ontario was second with 47.

The Baker boys, the defending GOL champs as well, finished second this time with 44 points behind La Grande (25).

Both Baker squads now advance to the Class 4A state meet this Saturday at Lane Community College in Eugene.

Baker Coach Suzy Cole said her girls ran well Friday.

"Our times were very good," she said. "Without exception our kids had better times than they've had all season."

Melissa Clarke was Baker's top finisher, placing second with a time of 21:01.

"Melissa ran very tough," Cole said. "She ran with Melody (Ontario winner Melody Haidle) the first two miles, pushing her. Melissa just gets stronger all the time."

Felicia Schneider was Baker's second runner across the finish line, placing fourth with a 21:54 clocking.

"Felicia had an outstanding race," Cole said. "We needed her to break some of the points from the other teams and she did a great job."

Kori Rayborn, Annika Yates and Charlotte Bowers finished sixth, seventh and eighth. Freshman Mary Bulger took 13th and Haley Adams 15th.

"Kori and Annika also were able to medal - the top seven at district medal," Cole said. "Those two and Charlotte have been working hard on packing it up.

"Mary is just a freshman, and gets stronger every race. Haley has gone through a rough season with injuries, but her leadership has been a big thing for us," Cole said.

Trevor Freese led the Baker boys by placing second with a time of 17:28 behind four-time district champion Matt Rankin of Ontario.

"Trevor ran a tough race," Cole said. "He went out and kind of ran by himself for a while. Then four or five La Grande runners overtook him.

"Trevor moved up to fourth with about 200 meters left, and then with 150 meters left he kicked it in. I was proud of the way he battled back."

Jacob Payton finished ninth, Brandon Lowry 11th, Jake Sandefur 12th, Skyler Young 13th, Joe Anderson 14th, and Kristian Krohn 15th.
