Sloppy ball handling hurts Bulldogs

Baker girls basketball coach Tim Smith wants

his Bulldogs to get up and down the floor quickly this season. But the

Bulldogs have to take care of the ball.

Baker didn't do that very well against Pendleton Tuesday in the Baker gym. The result was a 65-47 Pendleton win.

"We want to get up and down the floor, but tonight we were just a

little bit above our comfortable pace," Smith said. "We were a little

bit on the reckless side."

That recklessness allowed Pendleton to build a 22-10 lead after

quarter. Many of the Bucks' points came as the result of Baker

turnovers. Guard Sam McCloud tallied 12 points in the first quarter,

and post Kristen VanCleave added eight. Both players finished the game

with 22 points.

"We have to focus on being more patient on offense, and more patient rebounding," Smith said.

"Pendleton was playing in-our-face defense and we didn't handle it well."

Smith took the results for what they were - a learning experience.

"It was just an opening game. It showed us that we're not where we need to be," he said.

Smith was pleased with the way the Bulldogs bounced back in the second half, playing Pendleton to a 31-31 standoff.

"We played them even in the second half. I couldn't have asked for more hustle. We just turned the ball over too much in the game," Smith said.

Baker used four points from Whitney Phillips, two from Dallas Defrees and one from Mackenzie Warner to build a 7-6 lead midway through the first quarter.

Pendleton then went on a 9-0 run to take a 15-7 advantage. Baker never led again.

Tara Talbott led Baker with 10 points.

Baker (0-1) hosts Kuna, Idaho, Saturday. The freshman game begins at 2 p.m. followed by the junior varsity and varsity games.

Pendleton won Tuesday's JV game 40-39.
