Baker makes 3 of 4 free throws late to thwart Pendleton's rally
Baker used an all-around team effort and kept
its composure down the stretch to edge Pendleton 69-64 in a non-league
boys basketball game at Baker High School.
"It was a great effort all the way around," said Baker coach Craig Woods.
"Pendleton played us tough. But we made some shots and kept our
composure. We rebounded well, and got a lot of second shot
opportunities. It was fun.
"This kind of game isn't going to win us a championship. It just gives us a better idea of what we're capable of," Woods said.
After leading the entire first half, Baker fell behind 48-47 with 2:16
left in the third period when Pendleton's Devon Polhamus hit a fade
away jumper from the left baseline.
Polhamus scored 11 of his 15 points in the third quarter to help the Bucks take a 57-54 lead at the break.
"Our posts were in foul trouble and weren't going out to guard their big guys," Woods said.
Pendleton maintained its lead until midway through the fourth period when Baker went on a 9-0 run. Derek Blankenship scored the first four points after steals. Walker Kaseberg then bombed home a three-point shot from the tip of the key after a feed from Blankenship for a 62-60 Baker lead. Kennan Richards then finished the streak with another basket after a pass from Kaseberg.
Then, after Pendleton's Spencer Sundin hit a three-point basket to cut Baker's lead to 64-63 with 1:32 left, Blankenship's hoop with 1:19 remaining boosted the Bulldogs back on top by three points.
Pendleton was then forced to foul to get the ball and the Bulldogs made 3 of 4 free throws to ice the win. Pendleton had one last chance to knot the game with 24 seconds left, but Sundin's three-point try fell short and Baker rebounded.
B.J. Quintana, Jesse Brown and Kaseberg each scored four points, and Trace Richardson three, in the first quarter as Baker built a 22-9 cushion.
Kaseberg added eight points in the second period as Baker led 37-31 at halftime.
Kaseberg led Baker with 19 points. Blankenship added 18.
Sundin led Pendleton with 27 points.
Pendleton won the junior varsity game 65-50. Jordan Curtis, Justin Durflinger and Trent Howard each scored eight points for Baker.
