Baker uses 14-0 second-half run to break game open

Baker used a strong third quarter to break

away from Burns Thursday on the way to a 67-56 win in a non-league boys

basketball game at BHS.

Deadlocked at 27-27 at halftime, Baker (4-0) outscored the Hilanders 26-16 in the third period to build a 53-43 advantage.

The Bulldogs then scored the first eight points of the fourth quarter to complete a 14-0 run.

"This is just a good group of kids," said Baker coach Craig Woods.

"They'll make mistakes, but they don't get their heads down. And we're

not making the mistakes we were a couple of weeks ago."

Dekker Smith came off the bench to score 10 of his 17 points in the

third period. Derek Blankenship added eight of his team-high 18 in the

In fact, Baker's posts scored 36 points in the game - Walker Kaseberg

added 11 points, and Kennan Richards eight - most coming after assists

from Blankenship and Jesse Brown.

"Dekker had a big night for us," Woods said.

"Once Derek or Jesse start driving the lane, our posts need to be ready to receive the pass. Tonight they did it well.

"Walker got us started in the first quarter. They have to try to guard him with a guard because he's so quick. But then they have to deal with his leaping ability inside," Woods said.

Kaseberg scored 10 of his 11 points before halftime.

Six points from Kaseberg and four from Blankenship helped the Bulldogs build a 14-11 lead after one quarter.

Smith scored six points and Kaseberg four in the second quarter to keep Baker knotted at 27-27 at halftime.

Baker led the entire first half until one minute remained in the second quarter. Then, Burns scored to take a brief 26-25 edge. Smith then took a feed from Brown with 41 seconds left to give Baker a 27-26 cushion. A Burns free throw with 23.5 left tied the game at the break.

The teams traded baskets through the first half of the third period with Burns holding a 39-37 edge with 4:33 left in the quarter.

Smith then scored a three-point play, and added another basket to give Baker the lead for good at 42-39 with 3:30 left in the quarter.

Then, leading 47-43, the Bulldogs went on their 14-0 run. Smith sandwiched two more baskets around a basket by Brown to end the third quarter leading 53-43. Richards, Smith and Blankenship hit the first three baskets of the fourth quarter, and Brown added a pair of free throws to build the cushion to 61-43.

Baker travels to Fruitland, Idaho, Saturday.
